Very politically astute, Scott & Benita. This is just how I imagine the federal government treating a govt.-sponsored superteam in these paranoid post-911 times. And as bad as this is, I can imagine a superteam operating without that sponsorship getting treated far worse. They'd be treated as criminals…hey, I bet neither the new or old JS were ever "licensed" vigilantes, were they?
If not, that's gonna come back to bite them, especially the new JS…which is part of the reason you did this part of the story, right?
I'd say you are right on the money, except for one thing: Johnny Saturn II is licensed. For whatever reasons, he plays nice with the cops. We saw him produce his license in issue 6, when he turned over the Hypodermic Man.
As for how paranoid the situation has become, you are so correct. I worked in a govt. building during the period of 911, and the fear and paranoia were staggering. It wasn't just metal detectors everywhere, but rules against radios, mp3 players, and cd players; having to take off your belt; and other degrading things. I almost got arrested several times for being to outspoken to security officers. One of my friends did get arrested.
In the allegorical world of Johnny Saturn, the details vary, but the official over-reaction is the same.

Yeah, I would not want to be an American Muslim right now. The Nation of Islam and other Islamic sects in the US are probably under a microscope right now. As are people with "alternative lifestyles", like gays, lesbians, etc., and probably anyone speaking out against present govt. policies.
Demoted, huh? Oh… Snap?

Gee … could it be that the new JS *is* a cop, by any chance?
