Hmm, I’m with you DWolf-either Alaric now has a large smoking hole through his body, or Utopian’s just vaped a teammate. And we’ll have to wait ’till next week to see which-ARGH!!
I’m going to go with Alaric having a hole in his chest. Utopian doesn’t have full control of his expanded powers, but he’s not the kind who would accidentally get someone with friendly fire. Especially since of the heroes still in commission, Gauge and Triops are both ranged types, and squishy, so there’s no reason they’ll get that close. Afterall, the range is only a few feet, and just a moment before there was a major slugfest going on between Tom and Alaric.
No, most likely scenario is Alaric needing a shiny metal torso to go with that arm.
Second most likely scenario is there’s a villain with illusion-based powers, making Utopian THINK that he just vaporized Alaric, while Alaric escapes. A kind of psionic ninja smoke bomb, if you will.
Least likely scenario is that this is all a dream/training sequence.
That or not watching his lanes of fire so to speak Utopian just cut a hole though a good chunk of Spire City, or just broke his ideals by killing a man running away.
I guess Utopian’’s mood dictates the power and color of blasts, great effect.
Utopian blasts Alaric, but his powers have grown to the point that the blast continues on THROUGH Alaric, and burns a hole through a building or two. To borrow from 8Bit Theater, his energy blast just became Black Mage’s Hadoken.
On the other hand Alaric did attack his team unprovoked and murdered several heroes. Not to mention the “take over the world” plan. He deserved worse. At least he was awake when it happened.
-Hole in Alaric AND
-Vaped a teammate AND
-Put a hole clear through to the next county.
(Killing untold innocence and cause incalculable damage. What a pudding head!)
Much better use of background/foregrounds on this page. This sort of effect is totally what that other page needed. The glow and the smoke and everything make the panels feel full even in panels where we don’t see the city scape. They give this page a great feel to it by adding to the tone of what is going on. Nice job.
Who says Gauge or Triops have to be the only friendly fire casualties? Maybe Tom was only momentarily stunned, jumped up to pursue Alaric, and get his head blown off by Utopian’s energy blast. Utopian doesn’t like Tom, but not enough to want him dead.
I love the way Scott’s been keeping quiet during these last couple of pages. I can just imagine him reading all this speculation and cackling maniacally
I don’t think je just killed Alaric (it’s not Marvel, guys. Theses guys kill all the time). Maybe vaped a teammate, but i think i can have done also some big damage to the city around.
After all, it seem to me it need something really big for making Utopian going “wtf” in a so heated fight.
Perhaps, but we are talking about the Utopian here and you may have to look back to the pages at the very beginning to get a refresher on his moral Code. His first fight with JS is a good point.
BTW, I was just rereading the comic today. And I loved the way you had Dr. W. gesticulate when he introduced the Oppression Wave, the body language seemed very similar to a former German politician .
Looking back at the size of the beam from his fight with Ti Tom and looking at the size of this one, I’m guessing there is a quarter mile deep chasm running through the middle of the city with the last few microscopic remnants of Alaric slowly drifting to the bottom.
Blasted a hole through a man running away ? Hit a teammate in the smoke ? Didnt realise the full extent of your new powers ?

I’m thinking it’s friendly fire. Getting Alaric would be bad, but to kill a teamate…. “what have I done” situation. 8-o

Actually, I like this idea the best.

Either way; can I get a sploot?

Man, what if Tactical’s powers were mental illusions, and by growing closer to death; his ability to assault someone’s mind grew as well.
In this strip, he could think he was killing Alric, but really he just slaughtered the staff of life.

Well put.
Caused the health care bill to pass?

Ha! That’s it!
Well, most of these comments and speculations are great, but a comment on them either way might give away plot points.
That, and I spent the day at the Art Center painting, away from the web. Heh.

Absolutely. Utopian is arrogant and sometimes self-centered, but he absolutely believes in the sanctity of human life.
BTW, I was just rereading the comic today. And I loved the way you had Dr. W. gesticulate when he introduced the Oppression Wave, the body language seemed very similar to a former German politician
.
Thanks! Yeah, it was meant to mirror that former German politician.

Maybe he got Alaric AND Tom and half the survivors on both sides, and THAT’S why he’s doing a “WTF!?” – it’s not just ONE human life he’s ended.
