He’s not a quitter, he just saw his nephew killed and friends too and killed several himself….man i would have to reavaulate (sorry not sure how to spell it.) too. Quit for a bit then go after the jerks would be me after a break to mourn.
Johnny getting some power items? heh heh time to see the armorer and get that stuff incorporated into your armor asap! you gots some badass enemies out there…..
Good take on Barometer. He’s in his 50′s and, and he only held on so long to mentor his nephew. Appears that time is up.
While it’s unlikely that Johnny Saturn would become Captain Barometer II, it is really likely that the Tailor would incorporate some or all the tech into Johnny’s armor. He’s going to need all the aces up his sleeve he can fit there.
IIRC they’re the same things that CB built for Hyperspace but they are mk1. Hyperspace’s bracers are mk2. Notice they’re still on the gurney. Full details in one of Scott’s comments right after the initial attack on Hero Central.
Well, we have different views on the “real” Johnny Saturn issue. In my mind, the “real” Johnny Saturn is the current one. Now, I’m not precluding some serious action on John Underhall’s part in future issues (sooner rather than later), he’s really retired as JS.
Since we started the is story arc, I’ve been curious to see that Marvel and DC have both had similar legacy storyline. Dick Grayson is an excellent Batman, but we know Bruce Wayne is coming back. Grayson will either stay as Batman II, or return to Nightwing, assumably, but he’s still been an awesome Batman.
At Marvel, Steve Rogers came back, but he’s retired as Captain America and Bucky is now the official Captain America. Will they make it stick permanently? Maybe, maybe not. But, for the foreseable future, Bucky is Captain America.
Johnny Saturn was always envisioned as a legacy comic. We already know who Johnny Saturn III will be. And, as you will learn in a flashback story coming soon, Johnny Saturn I had sort of a precessor.
That’s really interesting, I hadn’t thought of them in that light. From my perspective, the old Johnny Saturn was always the main guy and it seemed that he was just taking a temporary break.
Maybe it’s a feeling that the previous Johnny had more internal character development or at least connection to me. I’ve seen the newer Johnny’s personal life and his main drive, but I didn’t really connect as well with him. I felt more pain, suffering, and triumph in the older one.
All in all, thanks for leaving the comment, cool to see it your perspective.
Not a problem, Malenx. As I mentioned, John Underhall will be back and featured quite often in the story arc starting next issue.
His physical problems have gotten better with proper care, but it’s like any aging athlete making a comeback is usually problematic and maybe embarrasing.
Well, it’s not been shown in the comic, its one of those far off plan type of things. We’ve got stuff coming down the pike that you simply won’t see coming.
As for Molly, she has a reason for being here, and her importance will soon be much clearer. I don’t see her as a vigilante, because she is made to simulate humans, and thus is unarmed and unarmored. But, she is important to the story, I can gaurantee that.
Mollie was the girl Dr W. used as a brain blueprint for Tara besides being his favorite guinea pig because of her survival powers ?
Depending on how Brian takes being powerless I could see him taking over as JS III eventually. Its clear that he has ALOT of respect for JS I and the choices that he made in his life.
OK, Saturn needs to incorporate the dagger and bracelets into his costume now. Because with Utopian out of the picture, the city needs another heavy hitter.
Well fiasco ? Its roughly tit for tat so far. Tactical’s right hand man is 86′d, 2 more dangerous villains have been splooted. ( The term has grown on me ). Lacerator and hypodermic man may have been apprehended.
Brian is probably powerless till he comes to terms with what he did. Hyperspace’s status is serious/unknown. Iron Claw is seriously hurt at the very least and we have 1 more dead hero.
Iron Claw is probably out for good even if he survives with a severed spine.
I dunno, this fight seemed like an utter failure for the good guys. It was more like teen-agers brawling in the streets than an organized fighting force charged with protecting millions of people.
It was a cool battle, and yes both forces seemed to be equally hurt, but I would have assumed there would have been more coordination and strategy with how the battles went instead of just the constant trading of punches. Maybe I’m reading to much into this, but I think it’s interesting. From my perspective, they weren’t prepared for a threat like this at all, and had the bad guys been more practiced together, perhaps they would have been leveled.
Well, I can see your point, to a point. The Squad was surprised and taken off gaurd, but they held their line and their command structure held and some of them were able to help each other. When Tactical left, and took his army with him, he was not defeated, for sure, but he did leave the Squad standing and having held its ground. Plus, when it comes to Titanium Tom and Gauge and Triops, this is a new team, one not really tested before. I give this one to the heroes by decision.
Tactical withdrew undefeated, though, and this is in part a testament to how dangerous he is. In my mind he’s become a sort of Doctor Doom character, but with nothing to loose. Very, very dangerous.
I believe the only reason Tactical withdrew is because with alaric’s death and the emotions released by that, he is rethinking the way he is going to assault the heroes…I (if I was him…) would use stealth, kidnapping and covet actions to demoralize and weaken the team of a period of time then restrike when i percieved they were weakest…heheheh
Tactical’s mistake was that he tried to take them all on, all at once. What he should have done was try to isolate them into smaller groups, take them on with 20 to 2 odds. Strike them when they’re out of costume, when they’re unprepared. Mind control Utopian’s boy to stab him in his sleep. Use illusions to make Hyperspace and Captain Barometer fight eachother. And so on.
I’d buy the sploot shirt as well as a green saturn shirt. I really like the shirt idea in general.
I am all for JS incorporating this stuff. Since his first appearance JSII has had nothing against using tech like his taser etc. I really do like this idea or concept.
Thank You for showing the aftermath and sticking with the scene so to speak. Movies and comics are too quick to cut away and let aftermath be explained in one bubble later. Sticking with the scene does a great job of making the arc of emotions travel more naturally. This has been a real pique for me personally.
Johnny looks great in panel 3 great facial expressions and if not just a tad awkward in panel 2.
We try to follow this stuff up, because I remember reading a Superman story in the 90′s where Metropolis was trashed, and then next issue it was whole and functioning again. This irritated me big time.
Battle is Hardly if ever truly organized or strategically structured, it is alive and changes depending on the combatants, the environment and of course the reason. The sheer Chaos and even the killing Utopian did reminds me of some instances in my life where training and regimental discipline gave way to the need to survive one more moment, and damn the person trying to deny you that.
Sometimes a Soldier or any warrior sees one death too many , hears one rifle report to many, dodges death or deals it one time to many. If Barometer is out because of all this, well what can be said… He laid his life , the life of his Family and Freinds on the line and he survived. that is a shock not many can handle no matter how much of a warrior you are.
I like the comic , it’s interesting I am enjoying its evolution.
THanks for the good word, MarvoDaMighty! You very eloquently described the Fog of War, and the crazy, senseless stuff that happens there. Any strategy is good till the first bullet flies, and then it’s improvisation at best, chaos at worst.
This would be SO much easier to read and fallow if you would update character profiles so I could look up Captain Barometer and find out what those bracelets do.
Unless your readers really have time to dig through your blogs and archives, there are key plot elements going right over their heads.
I’ve read the entire series from issue one at some point, but if those powers are explained in the comic itself, then I must have completely forgotten it.
It’s hard to enjoy a superhero story unless you know the parameters of the powers involved, especially if someone does something that blows your mind because they’ve never used their power like that before.
Tough words to hear, Darkfish–I’ll take them to heart.
We are actually hard at work on a who’s who and a summary page for new readers. That doesn’t help the situation at the moment, but we are committed to getting this sorted out.
I noticed that Capt. Barometer was putting the Sploot down on folks with 2 sets of bracers, but only gave one to Johnny Saturn while the other pair lies next to him on the gurney (actually the mk 2 ‘improved’ pair I would assume), why would he only give J.S. one pair if he’s quitting? Did he roast the other pair supercharging ‘em so they’re nice paperweights/mementos of his nephew and not a lot more?
Whether or not they’re still working, he’s likely keeping them as a reminder of his nephew, or sending them to his nephew’s family, or burying them with his nephew. There are more considerations he’d have to think about with Hyperspace’s bracers.
With his bracers, however, all he has to do is think about what he wants.
Sorry, wasn’t trying to browbeat you, you know I keep coming back because I enjoy the comic.
It’s one of the best webcomics out there for seeing superheroes do what they do best, and that aint tellin’ jokes. (too many webcomics forget that.)
I’m just trying to remove the obstacles in the way as far as fallowing the story, and when something happens with a prop or character that we see only once or twice a story-arc, there needs to be a place to go for context other then “oh-yeah Scot mentioned that in one of his blogs 6 months ago.”
I’m still a loyal reader though, sorry if I’m complaining allot.
Hi, DarkFish! Don’t worry, I took your comments as constructive criticism, not as browbeating. I am deeply committed to always making this comic better.
Posted so I can rock too =)
Really liking this arc, guys! Can’t wait to see if and how JSII incorporates the new toys into his suit…
Keep the comics coming, Scott! They’re awesome.
Quitter!
Ok, so he’s been through a lot
JS is getting quite a collection, First the Dagger, now the bracers
what do the bracelet do?
He’s not a quitter, he just saw his nephew killed and friends too and killed several himself….man i would have to reavaulate (sorry not sure how to spell it.) too. Quit for a bit then go after the jerks would be me after a break to mourn.

I wonder if Brian would be interested in the Mk2′s
IIRC they’re the same things that CB built for Hyperspace but they are mk1. Hyperspace’s bracers are mk2. Notice they’re still on the gurney. Full details in one of Scott’s comments right after the initial attack on Hero Central.
I’m waiting for the real Johnny Saturn to come back after this fiasco.

Wait, when did we figure out who JS III would be? Unless Mollie is going to step up? Though I see her being more a sidekick.
Well, it’s not been shown in the comic, its one of those far off plan type of things. We’ve got stuff coming down the pike that you simply won’t see coming.

Sploot!
(we’ve discussed putting out a Sploot t-shirt. It amuses me.)
White Tshirt, a big red splatter of 300′esque blood and then a nice SPLOOT! over it
.

No, Scott, that’s not ‘dangerous’. Thats fracking TERRIFYING!

What’s with the 2 sets of bracers?
One set was Captain Barometers, the other set was Hyperspaces. Two generations of the same tech.
Off a couple more villains, have a few more heroes retire, Johnny Saturn will have a utility belt to rival Batman.
I really like the idea that Johnny Saturn is not so much a single individual but as a kind of idea or concept.
Great Fight Scene : Regardless of the comments

First time over 30 comments that I can remember! Even as a fan I am happy to see such a reaction.
Yeah, me too! Of course a lot of those (11) comments are my replies, But I still think this breaks some sort of record. The people who post here ROCK!
