Hmm, Wissenschaft getting the shaft. Somehow I don’t think he’s going to take that lying down. I forsee Yet Another Supervillain War, right when everyone is still picking up the pieces from the recent superhero-villain war.

Oh yeah, and virtually no heroes able to interfere. Even Johnny has to rest and recover from his injuries in that clash-wonder if Synn knows that?

Ha! That’s how you really sink a rival mastermind’s operations.

Wissenchaft isn’t a mastermind. He’s a mad scientist and a zealot to his cause. Remember, back when JS I was active, Wissenchaft worked for Synn. It was only after Synn and Saturn killed eachother that he broke off on his own, making his own faction.

Wissenchaft doesn’t have the vision or attention to detail required to be a mastermind. He is focused too narrowly on his goal of enhancing cybernetic research, to the point where he gets sloppy in his work. A true mastermind has no concept of failure, because even if they suffer a setback in one plan, they can use that defeat to spur on two of their other plans. Wissenchaft never had a backup plan.

Hmm well yes and no. I do think he has means beyond his corp, you cant live as long as he has and be totally oblivious to the means to support you. For one thing he was smart enough to get out of Germany without great difficulty and he was able to carry out his work for over 65 years.
I dont know how much of that was the Star Cabal’s work ( who are playing Wissenschaft and Tactical out against each other for their own purposes).

On the other hand he’s a failure as a scientist too since both of his masterpiece creations are not fully ( Tara) under his control or even secretely conspiring against him and everyone else ( The Opression Wave ).

I would agree that Wissenschaft is a failure, only excelling at surviving.

Your comment about the Star Cabal is prophetic, I think.

When the Americans ‘liberated’ German scientists and relocated them to the USA, it was called Project Paperclip. These Germans essentially finished building our space program, among other things. The Russians grabbed as many of these scientists as they could, too, and the Germans in Russia and America never fell out of touch with each other. Not all the German scientists were Nazi or SS members, but some were, and they essentially got away with their crimes and got a new life in America.

Not to make too much of it, but German Engineering was decades ahead in quality and sophistication over the rest of the world. They made the vast majority of the giant Zeppelins, even those that got siezed and renamed to other countries.

If anyone ever wants to watch a really good movie about all this stuff, check out an old flick called “The Boys from Brazil.” That movie had a big affect on the stories I tell today.

I wouldnt say decades. In some aspects years, in others not so much. Steel quality and treatment they certainly were ahead. QC was also excellent. Other aspects of production they had a problem with too much engineering, it certainly hindered their production quotas.
If you want to make a case of jets its certainly nothing that Britain couldn’t have done had they backed Frank Whittle earlier with more resources. When there was a pressing need Britain didn’t have a problem of making jets operational ( V-1 interceptions required high speeds )

I wouldn’t bring up tanks as a design/tech victory for the Germans the successes they had with tanks is more due to their operational doctrine ( Combined use of arms ).

The Germans had a tank-design agreement with the Russians prior to WW2 and when they showed the Russians the Pz IV ( German heavy tank at the start of WW2 ) the Russians weren’t impressed at all. They knew what they had on the drawing board and nearly operational ( T-34 and KV-1) and they thought the Germans were holding back.
Late war German tank design wasn’t ahead at all. JS3 and the T44 ( proto T55) really were ahead of German ( and other Allied) designs.
The Russians for example always had rather bad propellants for their cartridges, coupled with not so good penetrator designs and QC problems. But their explosive fillers were bloody excellent.

If you want to compare German war time industry I would say its similar to todays US military procurement, too much political backfighting and favors.

Ah, I detect another history enthusiast! Glad to know that about you, DWolf!

I wasn’t getting into the jet production aspect of it, nor into the more quasi-historical conspiracy theory stuff (Nazi UFO’s, the Vril, etc).

Well, I guess I did offer my own version of Ultima Thule. Hmmn.

Everyone hates fine print. Except the people who profit from it. Maybe Wissenschaft hid some other fine print to counter it.

“As you can see here in this microdot, any attempt to execute your fine print will result in forfeiture of your possessions and you will have to go everywhere riding a unicycle and wearing a tutu with clown shows.”

Now they both have had an “old god” type of backing but Wissenschaft has lost ThuLynn and Synn who was already the top dog has gained one. I like this turn of events a great deal.

It seems very much that while Synn is retired from active duty, so to speak, he’s probably content to hang out with John Underhall, drink coffee with Eris, and engange JS #1 in a chess game with Spire City as the setting and it’s inhabitants as pieces.

I agree that Wissenschaft is too focused on minutiae to be effective and to do much of anything other than survive and get a lot of people killed.

While this is a smaller update, I do like how it both shows how Synn operates nowadays (behind the scenes) and for what purpose (Eris is sitting right next to him, after all.)

Good calls. Dr. Synn sat on the sidelines for the last half dozen issues, but he’s got big plans and he’s coming back to stir things up.

When Dr. Synn got separated from the demon, it was more effective than possible electroschock therapy, apparantly, and his worst psychosis seems to have abated. I’m not saying that he no longer has mental health issues, but he got better and has a better handle on things.

From our perspective, it’s interesting whether Dr. Synn will be more Joker or Lex Luthor now. In this scene, it appears he’s going the Lex Luthor route.

Recent Lex Luthor, you mean. The ‘original’ Luthor was more a Wissenchaft sort—goal-oriented, not too big on fine details.

I’m wondering if ‘Sane’ Synn , if he’s still bent on chaos, will really turn out to be more of a Ra’s Al Ghul—can socialize with his enemies, have ties to them, but still have that ideal he’s willing to throw all his weight behind when the time is right. Which is good—O’Neal’s villain is one of the first I recall who was multi-layered in that fashion.

(Heck, you’ve even got a Talia.)

          Hi, Rob!

You know, the Ra’s/Talia/Batman dynamic never even crossed my mind! Of course, I grew up reading those stories, so they are there, in my subconscous.

I’ve really enjoyed the modern business tycoon version of Lex Luthor–He’s badass. I even enjoyed the whole arc of Luthor as president.

And a side note since I know many ppl here visit Heroes-inc as well. I was getting virus upload warnings there again, and with the apparent lack of updates it seems like the site was hacked again. Yes, hackers are just like burglars.

Yeah but usually with a reason when late. Got the virus uploading attempt again when attempting to load his website as I said. Hackers are like burglars, once they know a place is easy to get into they will try again. He’s been troubled twice b4 now in a short time.
