Hmm, going on looks/names alone, it looks like an interesting mix of abilities.
Charge – Electric powers?
Jackdaw II – Named after a species of crow, and dressed like that, means he’s probably some form of melee type, possibly using a blade or other weapon.
Girder – Clearly a brick.
Silver Wing – Unsure. Almost certainly a flier, and something makes me want to say ice powers, but I dunno.
Triops – We already know he’s a precog with some other fun mental powers.
Benedetti – C’mon. The guy is clearly a mage.
Pretty good calls, I will say. Since these characters aren’t going to get quality face time for a bit, I’m going to run a detailed writeup on each of them in the blog.
Charge – She gives one. Definitely. Wha—powers? Have you got eyes, man?
Jackdaw II – He robs from the rich and gives to the needy, takes a little bit, but he’s not greedy.
Girder – The Metal Men have been looking for this dude. (Sorry, Scott, but he’d fit right in.)
Silver Wing – Damn, just hired and she’s already posturing. Ladies and Gents, our first casualty.
Triops – When you’re as scrawny as that, I guess the Dick Tracey look works, and gray helps keep people from noticing you before you get your pyche on.
Benedetti – Correction about Silver Wing; this is our first casualty, dead before the gate lifts. Presents an interesting problem to physical types, and is almost guaranteed to be the dude they send in first—“What more could happen to you?” they’ll ask. Be interesting if the answer is, “Plenty,” or, “I have post-tram from the last time I died, no thanks.” (I’m wondering if he’s named after the Count Benedetti who started the Franco-Prussian War?”
Great observations!
Charge: Doesn’t need superpowers because she’s so distracting! That won’t stop a bullet, but it can’t hurt either.
Girder: He does look he could be in the metal men, doesn’t he? Luckily, besides being made of steel, his powers aren’t that similar, nor as stretchy.
Silverwing: She’s a teenager, and she’s the most powerful, probably, of the new group. She almost had to join a group of older, wiser heroes, or with her powers she’d get in a lot of trouble.
Benedetti: In Italian folklore, a Benedetti was a good wizard, and a Maledetti was a bad wizard. His powers are the same as before, but added to the ghosts etherial ”biology.” I’ve done a lot of study on ghosts over the years, and related creatures, and I think he could be very viable. Plus, you don’t have to ensure him, or provide food for him, etc.
Normally, I would say yes. But, Benedetti was a wizard in life, and he’s still a powerful wizard in death. For that kind of guy, death is just a different stage of existence. It is all rather unorthodox, I’ll grant you that.
Great comic! I just saw your fan art of Bill and Frank off my good friend David Reddicks site Legend of Bill. I liked what I saw and decided to check out your site, Im VERY glad I did.
I have read all your episodes and Im loving it! Its cool to see how much all the characters and the story telling and the art has changed over the years. Congrats on such a wonderful comic.
I will be following your work from here on out and look forward to following the adventures of JS as long as you write/draw it. Thanks for such a great comic!
Thanks, Spacemanattack, and welcome to “Johnny Saturn!” Makes me glad I did the Bill fan art. I’ve only written back and forth with Dave a few times, but he seems like a great guy, very enthusiastic and in comics for the love of cartooning.
JS has been around for a while, so I don’t remember Benedetti. Did he die in the line of duty? If so, why would he come back even as a ghost? The only reason I can think of is for some kind of bragging rights or a guilt trip. “You want me to do monitor duty? Sure, but can you go over to my grave and make sure the grass is trimmed. You remember my grave right? It’s where my body was dumped after I gave up everything for this team.”
Hey, Alverant. It’s perfectly reasonable that you don’t remember Benedetti, because I’m not even sure if his death was on panel. His first real appearance was as a fever dream/hallucination by Symphony. The same applies to Jackdaw I.
Here the deal: When I drew that hallucination scene, I was rather pleased with some of the character designs, and I regretted that some of them were dead. Luckily, this is a legacy world, where new people take up old identities.
That’s both cool and reasonable—As many heroes as bought the farm in the War in Heaven, I’d actually expect more ‘legacies’ to try and fill some fallen relative’s tights, possibly looking for revenge against Synn. Which means, of course, they need to dig two graves.
Jackdaw looks very old school in a Kirby sense. I really dig Triops’s new get up. I am very happy to see him standing so tall. I am anxious to see Girder and Silverwing out and about as well as Charge. I like the non standard role that Benedetti might play.
Thanks, Dustin. Triop’s, while he hasn’t said so in the comic in so many words, was dressed in a ridiculous costume by Tactical, and now he wants his dignity back. Finding and keeping one’s dignity is not easy when you are short, three-eyed, green bald person.
I bet Triops is happy. He’s no longer the shortest member of the team.
Ha! True, true.

A ghost, eh? Does this qualify as “reaching” as in “reaching the bottom of the barrel”?

Purple leotards are not good for any kind of man. I still expect him to pull a snub nose out of the pockets of that new suit though!
For some weird reason this one page won’t resolve beyond a pixilated mess so I have no idea what you are talking about………
Ah, today I can see it! But isn’t Silverwing’s torso twisted one way and her feet the other…….
Girder has a “two-pack.”
