Utopian is looking beat down! He needs a V8 or something
So, Im still wondering how he lost his powers. They just sorta flew out of his mouth. Was that weird or what??
Ahhh, young love.
I don’t think even the Utopian understands the source of his powers, thus making him use that corny line about him him “being powered by the Utopian ideal.”
If Elect is a reality-changer, stands to reason Brian is, too. Ergo, he ‘made’ himself strong to begin with, and even stronger after Alaric and Skorn gave him a beat-down. But when he killed with that strength, Brian punished himself by making that power go away.
This makes me think of a story about Flash II (Wally West) in which a psychologist suggests West isn’t as fast as Barry Allen (Flash I) because he subconsciously feels/fears he’s not living up to Barry’s ideals/example. It’s built around Rudyard Kipling’s somewhat obnoxious poem “If”, a ball-busting list of standards if ever there was one.
A little training, and a new outlook on life, and he’ll be an underground “b list” hero like the original saturn. He might not be quite that kind of hero, but I still think that there might be a future for him there.
As he said, protecting the city was his life, I think he is going to return to that life. He just about has to.
Funny I was thinking he needed a chat with John Underhall, just to remind him you don’t need superpowers to make a difference, all it takes is the willpower and commitment to actually make a difference.
Plus it would help that he already respects the original Johnny Saturn.
He may be angry now, but it’s still a step up from how whiny and emo he used to get. (I say this with all affection for the character, mind you. I’m not interested in “perfect” characters, after all, and like our conflicted characters better).
I can understand being thrown off stride. But he’s being awfully selfish about this. Maybe that’s why he lost his powers? He was sliding into “look at me, I’m all that and a CASE of chips” mode for quite a while. He was blowing his own horn so hard, you’d swear he was double-jointed. He could do no wrong, he could never fail, he was DA BOMB.
In short, he *wasn’t true to his name*. A true utopian reflects the beauty in society, and only fights if he absolutely must. He lost track of that, becoming a power-cramped brute, eager to fight instead of reluctant. He probably still HAS his powers…his subconscious simply will not allow him access to them until he returns to a nature that is more in harmony with them.
That’s why the whining and emo stuff is frustrating…because it is only MORE OF THE SAME. It will not help. It will only prolong his weakness.
I was wondering if we were going to see U again, looks like he isn’t adjusting well to being human instead of a super.
Ah, U being a whiny little beyotch. Why am I not surprised?
And why can’t he just drink himself happy like a normal person?

Yeah, I agree with just about everything you said.

While he does not annoy me as he once did I do like to see him flounder a bit.
And flounder he does!
He may be angry now, but it’s still a step up from how whiny and emo he used to get. (I say this with all affection for the character, mind you. I’m not interested in “perfect” characters, after all, and like our conflicted characters better).
Damn, and I thought Hal Jordan was depressing. Can you please give this guy a fluffer so he’ll stop moaning?
I can’t say I’m shocked to see Brian – I mean Utopian – bally-hooing. Bit of a whiner, isn’t he.
Demosthenes Locke and EvilSupahFly:
Like any of us would be, he’s thrown off his game by his loss. Don’t expect long-term whining, because he’s made of sterner stuff than that.
I think a good analogy would be an artist going blind, or a musician going deaf, or a politician going dumb. It would shake them up, for sure!
Policians *going* dumb? You mean that’s not their natural state?
@Pfhoenix: Zing!
I used to think of myself as resembling John Underhall, but long hair, unshaven? Utopian is looking more and more like yours truly every day.
