“Johnny Saturn: Synns of the Father” trade paperback is now available for order through Amazon.com!

This 132 page, full-color graphic novel is the first, complete story arc of the battle between underdog mystery man, Johnny Saturn, and his worse enemy, Dr. Horatio Synn, a master terrorist bent on proving his theory of creating ultimate Chaos using Johnny Saturn’s hometown of Spire City as his testing ground. And not only does Johnny Saturn have to stop Dr. Synn, he has to fight Spire City’s group of superheroes, the Squadron Premiere, lead by The Utopian, who believes that fighting world-class criminals should be left to those with meta-powers. But not even Heaven or Hell can stop Johnny Saturn from doing his job.

Described as “The best post-modern, deconstructionist, paranormal, superhero, crime noir comic with mythological overtones there is!” Johnny Saturn is the underdog who bites back!

This is from Bob Freeman’s Blog:

As a long time comic fan, I am one of the voices that can be heard decrying the state of the industry. I can offer up a laundry list of all the things I think that are wrong in the four color world. It is always a pleasure for me to be able to shine a light on what is right in comics.

One of the shining examples of what is right is Scott and Benita Story’s Johnny Saturn. Take tight storytelling and old school artwork, toss them in a blender with the best of what has come before and the hope of things to come and Johnny Saturn is what is born from that volatile concoction.

Johnny Saturn, for me, is definitely a throwback to those heady days of mid-twentieth century “mystery men”, ala The Shadow, Doc Savage, and even The Batman (as originally conceived). He is the embodiment of that spartan work ethic and sure moral center that is largely missing in todays comics.

Johnny Saturn is hard-boiled, tooth and nail heroism that invokes the old school stylings of Jack Kirby, Wally Wood, Joe Simon, and Gil Kane, but matched with that peculiar blend of modern angst and classic art that has been the trademark of creators like Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons.

Johnny Saturn is larger than life in a way that can only be showcased by the “street-level” adventures of a man of mystery. It is a snapshot of reality, played out on a grand stage, with all the inner turmoil that is wrestled with by we, the readers, and that’s what makes Johnny Saturn tick. We know we are lesser men than Johnny Saturn, but his will and moral fibre are inspiring, and that kids, is what comics were meant to do. Not to be masturbatory fantasies, but inspiring tales that show us what we can be…

Johnny Saturn, in summation, rocks.

‘Nuff Said…

Hello, Folks:

Getting www.johnnysaturn.com up and running is going great! I just got issue 5 posted, so it joins issue 6 and what’s been released of issue 7. I’m still on schedule to have the whole thing operational by the time we go to Chicago Wizard World in a few weeks. I’ve also been messing around with the very cool e-shop that is installed there, learning how to operate and optimize it. It’s a robust shopping cart system, and it looks like it’s going to do the job!

What have I still got left to fix up? Well, beside reformatting issues 1-4, I want to put social tagging on there, and a better navigation interface. I also need to fill out the store, and get that rocking. This is when most of my secret plans for world domination kick in!

Hi, Folks:

My cunning plan for world domination continues!

I took down our Comic Genesis site, and I’ve started removing the archives from our Drunk Duck site. Meanwhile, I’ve reformatted and added issue four to www.johnnysaturn.com, making for issues 4, 5, 6, and much of 7 now posted there. Soon, it will all be hosted there!

I thought I had a good shopping cart picked out, but Benita reminded me that we want one that figures shipping by zip code. So, back to searching! This is too important to not do right.

Today, in Analog World, I laid out pages 8, 9, and 10 of issue 7. These are pretty cool, because this is when we first see Squadron Premiere’s headquarters and meeting hall.

Scott.

Hi, Folks:

I’ve been listening to “Johnny Cash: Solitary Man,” one of his great recordings near the end of his days, and before that I was listening to Neil Young’s “Comes A Time.” Needless to say, I’m in a pensive, wistful, bittersweet mood, and loving it. I’m not sure if the mood inspired the choice of albums, or the albums inspired the mood, but there you go!

As a lot of the Spire City characters you’ve come to know appear in the new Johnny Saturn stories, many of them will have new or modified costumes or hairstyles. I’m a firm believer that, while metaheros are well aware of personal branding issues and their logos, they also will change their costumes regurally. In our world, for example, we don’t demand that pop stars always dress the same way. They might have a fashion style, a mode of dressing that is recognizably them, but they change clothing daily. That’s the way Spire City is. If I licensed these characters out for various products, then I would have a different take on this issue, but I do not license them.

As a corrallary to this, I also allow characters to age and change. One founding character has but on about 60 lbs, and another has to use bifocals to read from her PDA. Age happens, and I see no reason to freeze these characters in their youth. I admire and love old people, always have, so our metaheroes are allowed to age too.

Hello, Saturnites!

A) First up, Joel Danford just called to let me know that “Johnny Saturn: Synns of the Father” is now up on Barnes & Noble! That is indeed a good feeling. Benita and I are doing happy dances.

B) Will Johnny Saturn return to being fully rendered? Oh, yes. It would be now, but I’m trying to get ahead enough that the strip doesn’t run out while we are at Wizard World Chicago. Maybe I should have hired an assistant colorist on this, but, really, I want to keep coloring it myself. Others may be more skillful than I am, but no one sweats the details like I do.

C) Will Johnny Saturn continue with downer episodes? Nope. Things are dire for our heroes in the beginning of this new epic, but the action and adventure are coming back. Let’s be frank: This is a dark yarn. Still, there will be excitement, mystery, momentum, and reveals coming aplenty!

D) I am strongly considering themed blog entries. Bob Freeman did this beautifully on his blog, with specialized headers for each blog category, and I want to too. So far, while I haven’t decided on the categories yet, I’ve considered: webcomics, art techniques, Johnny Saturn trivia, media reviews (prose, movies, music), and new art. I might even be able to coax Benita into contributing a monthly or weekly blog. In any case, I’m planning on blogging Monday through Friday.

Scott.
